Nolan wanted to use jones at FS and that just wasn't a good fit for him, he just can't cover well. He might be a replacement for Bell at SS at some point. Culver was as invisible on the field as you can get...I didn't see anything from Culver at all...

Marshall excelled as Kerry Rhodes’ replacement in Arizona last season. His versatility is what made him one of the Dolphins’ top free agent targets. But the plan is for Manning to replace Will Allen as the team’s nickel cornerback.

I thought we were going after Manning to play quarterback, not cornerback.

Man, his arm must be weaker than we thought...

Alabama recruited Phillip Rivers to play cornerback, but he went to NCSU because they said he could be their starting QB. He must have played iron man football back in high school;)

Maybe I'm wrong, but I'd take Jones over Marshall 9 times out of 10.

The Dolphins have been coy about their plans on defense this offseason. There has been speculation that Miami might consider moving Smith to safety next season, in part because there is a need and also because Smith has the size to play the position. I don't think that's the case, but this Marshall signing at least gives the Dolphins the flexibility. He can also play safety if needed.

The cornerback trio of Davis, Smith and now Marshall should make Miami's defense formidable against three-receiver sets.

This is why I'm still perplexed by the fact that they haven't cut or restructured Bell. I advocated moving Smith and getting a guy that could play that other corner and then have Wilson or a rookie play the nickel. I'm not convinced that Marshall can play the other corner.
But now we have Smith, Marshall, Clemons, Jones and Culver who can all play safety and are probably better fit for safety. We also have an expensive Bell and no real answer for that number 2 corner.

Just perplexing.

I don't think Smith is a better fit at safety.

I think Marshall will fit in well with us, even though most of us had to do some research on him after we signed him because we didn't know who the heck he was. One thing though is that if the Cardinals really wanted him back they could have had him as he gave them the chance to match Miami's offer. I don't think they wanted him back at the price we gave him, but he came a lot cheaper than several other free agent cornerbacks that graded out worst at Pro Football Focus. In fact, he graded out better than our own cornerbacks.

Barry Jackson wrote:
Arizona coach Ken Whisenhunt was genuinely “disappointed” to lose cornerback Richard Marshall to Miami and raved about his competitiveness and versatility. “He was an outstanding player, one that we wanted back. Very good feel for the game.”
