I know and understand that each NFL team has their draft approaches and this isn't to be negative, but look at all the names that are in this 2008 draft AFTER our 1st selection of the second round. How many of these folks would you have rather had than Phillip Merling?

Interesting, see below and you decide. I bolded my personal choices and of course this is easy to say now that each of these folks have proven their worth on the field in the NFL and we couldn't have had them all, but look at how many starters and IMPACT players there as I counted eight premium starters. Picking talent in the NFL is so critical for future success blueprints (see New England for the proper formula)

Miami definitely has drafted a few gems, no doubt, but it is always the ones that we passed up on that make us fans second guess. This is a nice wish list of players I bolded and what is so ironic is that some of the players are guys that could have really corrected a few glaring weaknesses of the Dolphins holes to fill.

Second Round
1. (32) Miami - Phillip Merling, DE Clemson
2. (33) St. Louis - Donnie Avery, WR Houston
3. (34) Washington (From Raiders through Falcons) - Devin Thomas, WR Michigan State
4. (35) Kansas City - Brandon Flowers, CB Virginia Tech
5. (36) Green Bay (From Jets) - Jordy Nelson, WR Kansas State
6. (37) Atlanta - Curtis Lofton, LB Oklahoma
7. (38) Seattle (From Ravens) - John Carlson, TE Notre Dame
8. (39) San Francisco - Chilo Rachal, OG Southern Cal
9. (40) New Orleans - Tracy Porter, CB Indiana
10. (41) Buffalo - James Hardy, WR Indiana
11. (42) Denver - Eddie Royal, WR Virginia Tech
12. (43) Minnesota (From Panthers through Eagles) - Tyrell Johnson, FS Arkansas State
13. (44) Chicago - Matt Forte, RB Tulane
14. (45) Detroit - Jordon Dizon, OLB Colorado
15. (46) Cincinnati - Jerome Simpson, WR Coastal Carolina
16. (47) Philadelphia (From Vikings) - Trevor Laws, DT Notre Dame
17. (48) Washington (From Texans through Falcons) - Fred Davis, TE USC
18. (49) Philadelphia - DeSean Jackson, WR California
19. (50) Arizona - Calais Campbell, DE Miami
20. (51) Washington - Malcolm Kelly, WR Oklahoma
21. (52) Jacksonville (From Buccaneers) - Quentin Groves, DE Auburn
22. (53) Pittsburgh - Limas Sweed, WR Texas
23. (54) Tennessee - Jason Jones, DE Eastern Michigan
24. (55) Baltimore (From Seahawks) - Ray Rice, RB Rutgers
25. (56) Green Bay (From Browns) - Brian Brohm, QB Louisville
26. (57) Miami (From Chargers) - Chad Henne, QB Michigan

True, but a lot of the analysts were on board with the Dolphins with this pick. He was supposed to be a good pass rusher, and if I remember correctly fell to the Dolphins at the end of the first round.

What this tells me is that if a team makes good decisions, they can find gems in the 2nd round.

Oh I remember Dave and again this isn't being negative, what I was really saying is that drafting talent is a speciality for sure and no one knows how these guys will really peform in the NFL until they get in camp and mold into the player they become. Phillip Merling was a need position pick and he was supposed to have a lot of upside with his size and strength and who knows, next season he could develop into a great everyday starter that makes more of an impact.

It is always interesting to me to look back and see those teams that do draft smart and find those 2nd round gems that looking back, now play like first round choices. It happens every year I know, but because we are Dolphin fans, we just remember the what "ifs" !!!!

Not that easy picking these guys out of all the analysis and tape watching thats for sure!!

Finhead, I already brought this up in my write up of our last 3 drafts. People don't wanna herer it. they think we're doing great. Guess that's why we've been in the playoffs the past 2 years.

Apparently merling was a great pick because he had a good game against the Jets 2 years ago. Sounds like a great analysis to me.

Donnie Avery is a heck of a speedster for St. Louis. Shame he got hurt this season.

I'd also put Calais Campbell in bold. He's playing LIGHTS OUT for Arizona at 34 DE, and also provides good pressure in the nickel from either the 3 technique or outside.

Merling was seen as a top 15 pick who fell because of an injury. He was great value at the time. I thought this would be his breakout season, but with all that happened, you have to wonder if he'll even make the roster next August.

That's a lot of good players in the 2nd round. Very impressive draft.

PR: Thanks for pointing out Avery and Campbell, I don't want to sell them short as they are very good solid players too, so I agree.

these teams were all dummies for passing on Desean Jackson. There were no question marks in his game, and now he's destroying secondaries.

Nope...just the fact that players of his style (Ted Ginn and Reggie Bush) haven't hardly done anything in the league.

The idea of looking back at who we didn't draft and declaring us bad at drafting is ridiculous. If use this measure to rate a teams draft then every team sucks at drafting because every team passed on great players.

If anything, this should be looked at as the overall quality of any particular draft and whether or not it was worth trading a second rounder for (AJ Feely, Daunte Culpepper, Lamar Gordon, Brandon Marshall, a box of girl scout cookies, whom ever else we've traded 2nds for)
