1. GM Jeff Ireland and coach Tony Sparano have a lot at stake the next two weeks.

The difference between 9-7 and 7-9 is the difference between having a winning and losing season, but Ireland and Sparano may find it’s the difference between saving and losing their jobs.

It was at this point the Dolphins fell flat last season ...

Can Sparano keep his team playing hard? ...

2. Young corners Vontae Davis and Sean Smith both had rough outings Sunday.

The Bills were down to one experienced receiver in Stevie Johnson, but no matter. QB Ryan Fitzpatrick shredded the young Dolphin secondary for 223 yards on 16-of-26 passing, and his two prime victims in coverage were Davis and Smith.

Smith continued his maddening succession of drops, letting another interception slip through his fingers in the first half. Davis simply lost coverage on a number of occasions and failed to make tackles after recovering. Smith was victimized on Fitzpatrick’s TD pass to Johnson midway through the third quarter that proved to be the game-deciding score.

No doubt the Patriots’ Tom Brady will be looking closely at this game film when his turn comes in a couple weeks.

3. Dan Carpenter isn’t the reason the Dolphins lost this game.

Those not paying close attention to the details will be quick to blame Carpenter for the outcome after he missed four field goals. And it was a hard-to-believe scenario, mostly because Carpenter had been so accurate, putting up Pro Bowl numbers in converting 28-of-34 attempts.

But none of Carpenter’s misses were chip shots, ...

More than Carpenter, the blame should fall to the offense that once again proved inept once it reached scoring territory. This season will be one remembered for that ineptitude more than anything else.
