The Dolphins appear to have lost both of their top two quarterbacks, Chad Henne and Chad Pennington, for the season today. And JaMarcus Russell isn’t the only replacement they’re considering.

ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reports that the Dolphins plan to bring in Patrick Ramsey, and they hope to sign him tomorrow. Ramsey, who last played in a game in 2008 with the Broncos and last started a game in 2005 with the Redskins, would likely become the No. 2 quarterback, behind Tyler Thigpen.

Mortensen also reports that the Dolphins are considering Chris Simms, who started one game for the Broncos last year and who was released by the Titans in September.

At 5-4 after today’s win, the Dolphins are very much in the AFC playoff race. At least as much as a team can be in the playoff race with Tyler Thigpen as the starting quarterback, and Patrick Ramsey, Chris Simms or JaMarcus Russell as the backup.

Has Colt Brennan thrown a pass in the NFL?

It depends on whether you want a starter or a backup... personally I think Thigpen gives us the best chance to win of any QB available. That said I'd do whatever it takes to get Jeff Garcia on the roster and sign someone else to be third QB. Ramsey looked beyond awful the last season he played and I can't believe the front office is bringing him in... Jamarcus even makes more sense... at least he can run.

And on a side note: Henne was supposed to get MRI resuts this morning... I've not been able to find ANY information concerning his status as of 1:35 PM... what gives?

Dolphins to work out Arena QB Tommy Grady again

Another name has surfaced in the Miami Dolphins' search for quarterback depth, as Omar Kelly reports Arena Football League quarterback Tommy Grady is expected to be brought in for a workout.

Posts on Grady's Facebook profile Monday and an AFL press release appear to confirm the workout, which would be the player's second with the team in less than four months.

Grady (6-7, 245) initially worked out for the Dolphins on Aug. 2, but was not signed, as the team already had four quarterbacks under contract at the time.

Primarily a backup in college at both the University of Oklahoma (behind Heisman Trophy winner Jason White) and the University of Utah (behind eventual Sugar Bowl MVP Brian Johnson), Grady went undrafted in 2008 and spent 2009 with the Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz of af2.

Grady and the Yard Dawgz moved to the new Arena Football League in 2010, where surpassed former FSU quarterback Xavier Lee for the starting job and went on to throw for 4,307 passing yards and 81 touchdowns with 17 interceptions.

With the Yard Dawgz moving to the lesser-known Indoor Football League, Grady signed with the AFL's Utah Blaze for the 2011 season, which runs from April to July.

If signed by the Dolphins, the Blaze would retain Grady's AFL rights. The team has already placed him on the Other League Exempt list.

The Dolphins are desperate for depth at the position after their top two quarterbacks went down with potentially season-ending injuries in yesterday's win over the Tennessee Titans.

Left with only one healthy quarterback for Thursday's game against the Bears in third-stringer Tyler Thigpen, the Dolphins will need to bring in one or two healthy quarterbacks just to get through the short practice week and have depth against Chicago.

Earlier reports have the Dolphins interested in free agents JaMarcus Russell, Patrick Ramsey, Chris Simms, and Tom Brandstater, with ESPN's Chris Mortensen saying the team hopes to sign Ramsey today.

I expect the Dolphins to sign one experienced quarterback to the active roster (replacing Chad Pennington, who would go on injured reserve) while Chad Henne is kept active for the time being in case his knee injury might not keep him out all season.

The Dolphins could then add a third healthy quarterback to the practice squad for the purpose of having another healthy arm in practice, which is where a young, developmental prospect like Grady or Brandstater could come in.

Grady has the size and an NFL arm, but he's clearly a long way from playing in the NFL and seems unlikely to even land a third-string job on the active roster at this point.

If he does end up on the Dolphins' practice squad for the remainder of the season, it would be interesting to see whether or not he is re-signed and brought back to training camp in 2011, or if he'll just return to the AFL.

Give the Grady guy a shot. Sounds like he can sling it from his AFL numbers. Thigpen should stay healthy for at least the rest of the season so it's not like he'll have to play. We've already worked the kid out before so there should be something to him. When next season rolls around we will have Henne, Thigpen, and either Grady or someone we choose to draft. Whoever we choose we need to get them down to Miami quick because we need them up to speed as fast as possible in case the worst happens. Personally, I think Thigpen will do just fine for the rest of the season. As long as he keeps from making too many turnovers and makes plays with his feet then he should do nicely. The season with Kansas City where he was forced to start after they lost their first and second string guys he did pretty well. He might do great considering how much better the talent is around him now in Miami.

I'd rather have a veteran than a youngster like Colt Brennan.

Jamarcus Russel is in no way shape or form a solid option... he's a worthless player.
