Over the Cap has Miami at $16 million+ over as of today. I know we have gone over some hypotheticals but let's look at what is more realistic in the next two months as we approach the draft.

Designate Byron Jones a post June 1 cut. Miami saves $13.6 million right away.

Trade Cedrick Wilson for a late Round pick. He has 2 years and $16 million left on his deal, with only $5 million guaranteed. A team can take a flyer on him for next season and cut him with no dead cap in 2024. It is an attractive option for a team not looking to spend big who needs a 2 or 3 type at a reasonable price. This frees up $6 million in cap space for Miami.

Approach Tyreke Hill and Nick Chubb about restructures. Miami has invested both years and dollars, and combined they would free up over $33.5 million in cap space.

Use a good portion of the now $36 million in space and approach Connor Williams, Robert Hunt, Zach Sieler and Christian Wilkins about extensions. All four of them are free agents after 2023 and were vital to Miami's success. They also appear to be team first guys who you want in the locker room.

Now you might argue that these moves have Miami back down to zero cap space. Maybe, but there are multiple other restructures and cuts to free up an additional $35 million. Restructuring Terron Armstead, Emmanuel Ogbah and Jerome Baker would free up $27 million alone (I just don't know if they are in the long term plans).

Now that Fangio is finally on board, the defensive decisions can start to be made.

No one is going to trade for Wilson.

Man, I wish this team would invest an early draft pick on a big back.

Along with the mistakes on drafting for the O line, this oversight has been hurting the Phins mightily. I doubt they do it this year though….O line and linebacker probably will be the focus.

For a late round pick with absolutely no risk to your cap if you cut him, I believe a team would be willing to talk.

This could be an option.

Wilson is owed a base salary of $7M this season with a $1M signing bonus. If Miami trades him before June 1st, they’d see a cap savings of $6M and a dead cap hit of just $2M.

For a team like Dallas, which desperately needs depth at wideout, Cedrick could be an easy buy for them if they can make some room within their own salary cap. He knows the system, wouldn’t cost much in trade (late-round pick swap?), and showed that his best ball so far has been played out of the slot in a Mike McCarthy/Kellen Moore offense.

Completely disagree. Consider the situation similar to Mike Gesicki getting attention on the free agent market. Just because neither he nor Wilson were very good fits for what McDaniel wanted to do doesn't mean they aren't valued by other teams.

I specifically added the attractiveness of his contract to teams who need a veteran presence at cheap money. Miami can flip him for a conditional pick or simply take a 7th Rounder to free up the cap space. I can think of several teams in tough cap shape who would bite.

Haha, good catch.

I think Miami is more into speed than a power back.

Yeap, Miami could get a 7th at least for him. Many talking heads loved the move. However, it came before Hill became available or I believe Wilson would have done more. With Hill he was a non-thought.

Hate to say it but I wonder if Ogbah becomes a trade candidate as well. Saves over $11 million in cap space this year and a trade partner is not on the hook for a ton of money if they move on in 2024.

Thinking he may be a better fit on a 4-3 defense. Maybe a trade partner in the NFC for a mid round pick. Ogbah is 30 and doesn't have the best track record for health. With Philips emerging, Chubb locked up to a big deal and Van Ginkel offering pass rush at much better price, you could argue Miami may look to use those cap resources to reinforce another position.
