Josh Boyer was fired along with a few defensive position coaches. All were Belichick guys.

Not sure how I feel about this, the defense did regress but were also inundated with injuries.

I thought Crossman would be the first to get the axe.

The defensive coaches are getting fired, while the offensive coaches are interviewing for promotions.

What a difference a season makes.

Here is more from the PBP:

Quote:
It will be interesting to see where McDaniel reaches for his next defensive coordinator.

One candidate of interest after McDaniel took the job is wily veteran Vic Fangio, who is well-respected and could also contribute a steady veteran voice for the youthful coach.

The Dolphins also announced safeties coach Steve Gregory, outside linebackers coach Ty McKenzie and linebackers coach Steve Ferentz won't return.

The rumor mill keeps churning out Tom Oliva-no-Defense's name. We can only hope.

Ha.......Flores, Oliva-no-Defense, Wannstedt all great choices.

Seriously, I do like the idea of a Vic Fangio type, with prior HC experience. Hopefully, someone like that wouldn't be an A$$ an look to help McDaniel with the nuances of being a HC.

I third Vic Fangio. The guy might not be cut out to be a head coach but he is a defensive wizard. Plus, with prior experience as a head coach, he can be one to advise young Mr. McDaniel.

As Rich has mentioned a hundred times, the Boyer defense relied on stud CBs to hold long enough for the blitz to work. Once CB injuries set in Boyer couldn't adjust.

If a new scheme allows Miami to not have to spend a fortune in the secondary and better utilize the front 7 then I'm all for it.

Fangio has been coaching in the league almost continuously since the mid 80s

Yep, I saw it coming. I actually liked Boyer's aggressive style, and I thought he did his best coaching job this year with all the injuries. Still, his scheme does not get the ball back to the offense quick enough and was costly during our losing streak despite the investment the Dolphins have put along their DL. And, this was a problem last year with Flores/Boyer without the injuries.

Miami's defense ranked 18th in yards per game and 24th in points allowed and it wasn't good enough. Miami had key injuries to Byron Jones, Emmanuel Ogbah, Brandon Jones and Nik Needham. But the Dolphins still had good-to-very good players like Xavien Howard, Christian Wilkins, Zach Sieler, Jerome Baker, Jevon Holland, Jaelan Phillips and Bradley Chubb.

It will be interesting to see where McDaniel reaches for his next defensive coordinator.

Since Vic Fangio is the obvious choice being mentioned by everyone, he will mostly likely either not come here or come here and suck.

Sean Desai is a candidate. He's supposedly a great teacher. Brilliant mind.

Would be kind of funny if Payton wound up in Denver. Tough to imagine that reunion happening so quickly.

Interview is today. Offer him a sweet deal, McDaniel.

Desai is interviewing as well today. He interviewed for the Viking DC yesterday. It is very possible that the Dolphins have their new DC at the end of the day as I imagine they are interviewing their in-house candidate LB Coach Anthony Companile today as well.
