 Dolphins honor Shula with statue
Quote:
MIAMI GARDENS — Even at 80 years old, and far enough removed from his coaching career to have a statue crafted in his honor, Miami Dolphins legend Don Shula still has the same feistiness he showed during his 33 seasons on the sideline.

Following the dedication of Shula's statue outside the team's new offices at Sun Life Stadium, he chastised former quarterback Dan Marino for showing up 53 minutes late and interrupting the ceremony.

"Marino's going to get fined," Shula said. "I'll let him know how much it's going to be."

He also jokingly questioned the accuracy of the sculpture.

"I think the chin is too long on that statue," Shula said, jutting his lower jaw into the air and laughing. "My chin is a lot shorter than that, isn't it?"

There were several light moments during the unveiling, which was attended by roughly two dozen former players, Florida governor Charlie Crist, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, Dolphins owner Stephen M. Ross and coach Tony Sparano.

Among the ex-Dolphins were Dwight Stephenson, Bob Griese, Larry Little, Dick Anderson, Manny Fernandez, John Offerdahl and Bob Brudzinski.

The bronze statue captures Shula raising his fist as he was carried off the field by Hall of Fame linebacker Nick Buoniconti and reserve offensive lineman Al Jenkins after winning Super Bowl VII in Los Angeles. The Dolphins beat the Washington Redskins 14-7 that day to complete the NFL's only perfect season.

Long overdue.

Historically speaking, Don Shula is about the only reason our team is even on the map.

I believe this is his second statue, but this one has a much nicer touch. What an honor.
