The Dolphins’ seventh and newest tight end is the son of NFL Hall of Famer Mel Blount, who played 200 career games for the Pittsburgh Steelers and finished his career with 57 interceptions. Blount’s path to the NFL doesn’t jump come from his bloodlines, however — he’s enjoyed a successful career on the hardwood, too. Blount spent two seasons playing for Cleveland State before a transfer to North Carolina Central, where he averaged 19.2 points per game as a senior.

At 6-foot-7 and 230 pounds, Blount has a basketball player’s frame; but such athletes have made successful transitions to tight end before in the past. The odds are high that Blount won’t be making the Dolphins’ roster in 2021 but he feels like a contender to push Chris Myarick for the team’s tight end spot on the practice squad — if he’s got dynamic athletic skills, he may be well worth the flier the Dolphins appear set to take on him.

The most fascinating Dolphins undrafted free agent isn’t a rookie. Former North Carolina Central basketball player Jibri Blount, the son of Pro Football Hall of Fame cornerback Mel Blount, was part of the 2020 draft class and wasn’t made available to the media this weekend. He never played college football, but the Dolphins will allow him to try his hand at tight end.

Blount, who’s 6-7 and 230 pounds, played only basketball in college, averaging 15.2 points and 7.3 rebounds in 55 games and 31 starts. He was the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference’s Player of the Year and was named the conference’s player of the week five times.

While Blount is a long shot for the 53-man roster at one of Miami’s deepest positions, an impressive summer could land him a spot on the practice squad. This marks the second consecutive offseason that the Dolphins are trying an outside-the-box experiment at tight end.

Last offseason, they signed Bryce Sterk, who ranked among the FCS sack leaders at Montana State, and tried to convert him into a tight end, a position he hadn’t played since high school. But that experiment ended when he was released in August.

This is a definitely a "project". I love his size. I wonder if we should have a bet on who lasts longer at TE in the NFL: Blount or Tebow.

I don't know Prof....Tebow did run a 4.7 40 at 6'2"+ and 230#+.....11 years ago. You're faster than you were 11 years ago, aren't you?

Supposedly with another 3 games played, or a camp injury that holds him out for awhile, he's eligible for the NFL pension program. Don't know if it's true or not, but multiple people are talking about it that way.

I love Tebow and I don't mind him giving it a shot, but I think it's a very long shot. He'll be back up in the booth soon.

The Dolphins announced Monday they signed tight end Carson Meier. In a corresponding move, the team waived tight end Jibri Blount with an injury settlement.

Meier started one game for Atlanta in 2019 with multiple stints on the team’s active roster. He spent training camp with the Falcons last summer.
