A report this morning is indicating that the Dolphins have agreed to terms on a contract with nickel corner Justin Coleman, formerly of the Detroit Lions and New England Patriots, on a 1-year contract worth up to $2.75M.

For Miami, the expectation should be that this team has checked the major defensive boxes other than looking to further boost the pass rush opportunities up front and adding another linebacker capable of playing in coverage (plus depth). Yes, the team would ideally peg down a rotational defensive lineman and more linebacker depth but the Dolphins have done well to double down on their identity early on: the defense.

Coleman signed a four-year $36 million deal with Detroit in 2019 and was one of the league’s highest paid slot corners.

The Lions recently released the cornerback after playing 11 games in 2020, allowing a completion percentage of 77.8 percent on 45 targets. The completion percentage allowed was his highest in the last three years.

You might think that merry-go-round of moves that don’t ultimately solve problems long term is acceptable because at least the team has Igbinoghene -- and he’s been told he’s going to get a chance to compete for the slot cornerback spot this season.

Well then, why did Miami agree to sign slot cornerback Justin Coleman on Wednesday?

So, this is the problem that I have with this signing, and 'Mando hits it. While I like the competition that we are creating, did we need another nickel CB to eat up cap? A fan that just shoots from the mouth would just say, "because Igby sucks", but with holes at C, WR, and OLB we seem to be just throwing darts.
