He's on injured reserve and a free agent after this season. He will never play a down for so we effectively bought a fifth round pick for 4.2 million dollars

Without knowing what the future pick the Dolphins are sending back is, we can’t really assess that trade, but it seems likely that the future pick is actually worse than that fifth-rounder, and this is actually the Rams unloading the remainder of Talib’s salary this season. Talib is a vested veteran, which means his full salary is guaranteed for the rest of the season, and the Rams would have been on the hook for the rest of his salary if they had released him.

Talib becomes a free agent after the season.

Whether Talib actually plays for the Dolphins remains to be seen. He’s currently on injured reserve, and the Dolphins may just leave him there for the rest of the year and pocket that pick from the Rams.

He's got familiarity with Coach Flores and this defensive staff. If they can re-sign him, they'd have two veteran starting CBs which would allow them to allocate their draft picks to other positions of need.

He's not getting resigned. It's not just the 5th we're getting, its his comp pick when he signs someplace else. Not bad for 4.2M.

This is bizarre.

I’ve never seen a trade by this kind of design.

Miami should be able to find good help on the trenches with that 5th rounder.

A little more info on the Talib trade where we picked up the Rams' (via Baltimore) 2020 5th round pick and Talib's remaining $4.2 million contract. Since Talib is familiar with Flores in his time with the Patriots, he may be convinced to play for the Dolphins in after he becomes a free agent, but he didn't play that outstanding in the 5 games that he did play this year for the Rams.

Barry Jackson (Miami Herald) wrote:
Miami will send the Rams a 2022 seventh-round pick.

Talib in on injured reserve with a knee injury and isn’t eligible to return until Week 15. Coach Brian Flores was non-committal about whether Talib will play for the Dolphins at that point or at any point. Flores said he was unable to say if Talib will even report to the team.

Depending on what the Dolphins do with signing FAs this upcoming offseason there may be no comp pick for letting Talib walk.

Brock Osweiller deal was similar, this isn't the first.

Also true, but we'll see. You have to know Grier is keeping that potential 3rd in the back of his mind.

It might be best to re-sign him. You've got two established CB's. Focus on the trenches and your signal caller

A little more information on Talib and how he may not even show up in Miami. If Ross is ok with spending $4.2 million on a 5th round pick, and I am sure that he is as he wants Grier to do anything to build a dynasty, then this was a pretty smart move by Grier.

Pro Football Talk wrote:
He’s in a rehab program in L.A.,” Dolphins coach Brian Flores said Wednesday, via Omar Kelly of the South Florida Sun Sentinel. “We talked about that. He’s not eligible to come back for a period of time. He’s going to rehab in L.A. for a little bit, and we’ll take it from there. That’s the conversation I had with him.”

Talib becomes eligible to return from injured reserve in Week 15, but the Dolphins can bring back only two players and likely want to use their short-term designations on players who factor into their future. Defensive end Jonathan Ledbetter, rookie linebacker Andrew Van Ginkel and offensive tackle Julien Davenport are candidates to return from IR.

So Talib is unlikely ever to see the field for the Dolphins.
