It's good to hear a veteran who is willing to make himself versatile. As a strong safety, he's had to play against the run a whole lot. It's advantage to a team to have players like McDonald and Reshad Jones with the Pro Bowl ability at SS. Unfortunately, a team only needs one SS.

As so many Dolphins are being asked to fill so many roles, versatility is an almost-mandatory quality for job security, which is where McDonald should feel good about himself. Once again, it’s being floated that McDonald, 28, could also see action at linebacker, especially if Bobby McCain continues to line up at safety rather than cornerback.

McDonald doesn’t flinch at the prospect.

“I think I’m a physical player,” he said. “That’s on tape. I think that being all around the field and being in a new scheme is a different challenge for me in general. That’s something I’m enjoying right now.”

McDonald stressed that under Flores and new defensive coordinator Patrick Graham, it’s not enough for players to know their assignments. They have to understand the big picture — what the entire defense is trying to do and why. So if McDonald has to study all the other roles anyway, alternating between the secondary and linebacker won’t be as huge a leap.

“It’s not just me,” McDonald said. “Everybody’s moving around, so it’s something that we’ve all got to buy into and adapt to. And I think it’s going to give offenses fits once we get lined up and we’re going to know who’s where and stuff like that. I think that can help us in the long run.

“The big thing now is buying into knowing what the hell we’re doing.”

McDonald offered a for-instance, pointing to times in his previous six NFL seasons when he may have been “locked into” playing strong safety. Now, he said, “When things hit the fan, we know how to solve problems.”
