Hoo boy. Another wasted draft pick on an offensive lineman.

Sun Sentinel wrote:
The Dolphins waived/injured offensive lineman Isaac Asiata, a former fifth-round pick by the Dolphins in 2017. Asiata was expected to compete for a position at left guard, but has appeared in only two games while spending the majority of the last two seasons on the practice squad.

Asiata likely will reach an injury settlement with the team before pursuing another opportunity in the NFL.

I've been saying this for a few years, but the Dolphins need to hire a scout who has had success scouting offensive linemen.

Armando Salguero wrote:
And the frustrating thing about this pick is that Asiata was drafted out of Utah with the 164th selection. And with the 190th selection the Los Angeles Chargers selected Sam Tevi, who was on the same offensive line as Asiata at Utah.

And Tevi was a backup as a rookie. And last year he started 15 games and won the starting right tackle job for the Chargers ahead of Joe Barksdale, who opened the door for Tevi when he got injured and then was cut when he got healthy because Tevi won the job outright.

Somebody in the Dolphins’ personnel department studied the same Utah offensive line and picked the wrong guy.

I had high hopes for Asiata. I heard an interview with him on Sirius before he was drafted, and he came off as an extremely intelligent, high character guy. He just never developed with us. I fully expect someone else will pick him up and get more out of him than we did.

It's NOW official. After the 2017 draft Todd McShay said, "Isaac Asiata was also a good value for the Dolphins in the fifth round." NFL.COM said, "Don't be shocked if fifth-round G Isaac Asiata winds up playing the most as a rookie" Shrek: "What a load of *flush*.

The Phinsider wrote:
Isaac Asiata has been something of a disappointment for Miami Dolphins fans and coaches over the course of his short career, and now, the team is saying goodbye to him for good.

According to the NFL transactions page, the Dolphins released Asiata (undisclosed) from injured reserve with an injury settlement. The 26-year old guard suffered the injury sometime during the team’s offseason program and was initially waived in mid-May. After clearing waivers, Asiata reverted to Miami’s injured reserve, where he stayed until finally being officially released by the team on Friday.

It could also be that his offensive line coach was too busy with cocaine and hookers to properly develop him.

I haven't done the research, and I imagine there's plenty of answers, but I'd be curious to know who was left after his pick, that we could have drafted that is performing great or is still producing significant snaps on other teams. That's a lot of research I know, but just a curious question.

I just looked and there are names you'd recognize but not any gems. Wikipedia is pretty easy for listing draft results and trade details.

I’m sure the PD is just paying him more cash than Miami.

Simple economic move for Asiata. Not many are given the chance of becoming a police officer & setting their families up for life. He must’ve jumped at the opportunity. Miami will miss him.

Asiata was highly successful in Utah...an absolute road grader. Injuries and bad coaching can work wonders.

Issac was a 5th Rd. pick. Not like a prime spot to not expect a miss.

When one factors in that Miami has yet to develop anyone outside a 1st Rd. pick on the OL, then either Miami cannot identify quality OL prospects to draft or they cannot develop the prospects.

2019 - Michael Dieter ( 3rd )
2019 - Isiah Prince ( 7th ) - Already Cut
2018 - No OLman
2017 - Issac Asiata - ( 5th ) - Out of the Leauge
2016 - Laremy Tunsil ( 1st )
2015 - Jamil Douglas ( 4th ) - Out of the Leauge
2014 - Ja'Wawn James ( 1st )
2014 - Billy Turner - ( 3rd ) - Currently Starting for GB
2013 - Dallas Thomas ( 3rd ) - Out of the Leauge
2012 - Jonthan Martin ( 2nd ) - Out of the Leauge
2011 - Mike Pouncey ( 1st )
2010 - John Jerry ( 3rd ) - Was Able to Start for the NYG for four yrs ( 14-17 )

Wow, Miami has truly ignored the OL in the draft. That is 10 yrs of drafts.

Wow, that's ugly. Well anyway Asiata is a very high character guy and I'm glad he's found his calling. Good on him.

PS our line still sucks. Hopefully we draft 2 OTs and 2 IOL this year, and I'm not even kidding. I do so in my mocks. Easy to do with all these picks.

Yep...I could actually care less about getting a QB this year if they would actually commit to fixing this dumpster fire of an O line. I want Eason, but people in hell want ice water too....
