Dolphins DL Coach Kris Kocurek knew him well in 2015 when Wright played for the Lions. I'm sure this isn't just to send a message about the fighting and taking cheap shots, but it did factor. Wright wasn't going to make the team.

Barry Jackson wrote:
Hours after he threw an elbow at running back Kenyan Drake, the Dolphins released veteran defensive tackle Gabe Wright on Monday, according to a source.

The move has not been announced.

Wright grazed Drake with an elbow to the back when Drake wasn’t wearing a helmet. One Dolphins source said that Wright shot was uncalled for.

The Wright incident was among several fights during practice.

Wright has had some good moments in training camp and generated a pass rush on at least one play in Thursday’s loss to Tampa Bay.

Wright, in his fourth season out of Auburn, has appeared in 13 NFL games over his three-year career, including seven with Detroit in 2015, five with Cleveland in 2016 and one with Miami last season. He has nine career tackles.

But even if Monday’s incident hadn’t happened, Wright would have been an underdog to survive the Labor Day roster cuts.

A little more perspective on it from PBP's Joe Schad.

Joe Schad wrote:
Wright happened to star at Auburn. Drake happened to star at Alabama.

While most coaches and players downplayed the chippy and feisty elements of the physical, tense practice, defensive coordinator Matt Burke seemed annoyed.

“You’ve got to get good work in too,” Burke said. “It can’t just be … It’s got to be within the context of doing what we’re asking you to do and executing the scheme too. Just coming out here, being a jack--- and running around, that doesn’t help us either.”

The release of Wright could give a few more opportunities on Friday night at Carolina to Jamiyus Pittman (UCF), Anthony Moten (Miami) or Cameron Malveaux, a defensive end who can play inside.

This guy is a fringe bubble player...and decides to sucker punch our starting RB in the back of the head with less than a month to go until opening kickoff. I’m sure Gase wanted to take his head off. Dumbass.

:)

Ballage saw a lot of action in game one....I get the feeling that our staff might actually look to have Ballage and Drake sharing carries pretty evenly. Well....if Ballage learns to hold on to the ball.

FYI. Good luck to him. I remember when we signed him that I was wondering why we signed a player whom the Browns didn't want.
