You don't know what you have until the pads are on and the hitting is real.
But...

Even though we didn't take an O-lineman in our draft at all (for the first time in team history) and even though we didn't take a QB (much to the surprise and chagrin of Dolfans everywhere,) I think I am starting to really see a plan in place.

I think... I like this draft class. Here's why.

1) How many projected starters do you see here? I see 3 - 4 (Fitzpatrick, Gesicki, maybe Baker and probably the kicker Sanders.) Add to that the fact that it's certainly expected that both Ballage and Smythe will see significant playing time in their rookie campaigns. Not only that, the other 2 guys (Poling and Armstrong) have a quality noticeably lacking in the rest of the depth chart at their respective positions, and you realize that all 8 picks have a legit shot at making the roster and contributing. Will it happen? Who knows. History would say probably not. But on paper, it seems plausible.

2) That quality mentioned above in regards to Poling and Armstrong? It's SPEED. And it is a defining characteristic of almost everyone drafted this year. These kids can fly. And that can't be taught or coached. And, it was a weakness that other teams exploited all too often last year, especially on defense. Can they play? We'll see when the pads come on. But at least we know this much. We drafted players that are fast and athletic.

We had a plan. We stuck to it. Will it work? We'll see... but at least it seems like there was a real purpose in the draft this year.

On paper, this draft looks good. However, it is hard to expect too much from rookies at so many key positions. I still think the O line is a question mark, we need more help at linebacker, and is Tannehill ready? I don’t know how much time Gase will get. The schedule is favorable though.

Who knows, maybe this will turn out to be a special draft for the Phins?

My big problem with this draft is I heard “lacks toughness” a couple of times. It seems we are trying to build a finesse team.

The fast and athletic guys may not all be starters right away but are potentially good special teams contributors while hopefully being coached up at their positions.

Most of the time in football, to gain speed, you give up toughness.

But lacking toughness is not something I want to hear about running backs and linebackers.

I agree wholeheartedly with the toughness argument. I read that our new kicking prospect is feisty. I think Fitzpatrick and Smythe are tough as well. Hopefully its a good mix.

Well, I'm not sure I care much about kicker toughness, but certainly would like it at tight end and safety. :haha

The Phins kicker is really tough!
How tough is he?
The Phins kicker is so tough he can kick the air out of the football. When the Phins drafted him the patsies let out a sigh deeper than the one by the rest of the league when Barrios was taken by them in the 6th.

I'm glad the feisty kicker comment is cheering people up after a rough Draft Day 3.

Thanks jgod1 you never can tell when a kicker may make the saving tackle on a kick-off.
