Post Karlos Dansby needs to be more of a "banger" in the AFC East
Quote:
Miami is much better at inside linebacker.

"Drastic improvement there in throwing downs,'' Scouts Inc.'s Matt Williamson said. ``Last year, they were heavy, slow and exposed in the middle of the field. Karlos Dansby can fix that.''

Evaluators like Channing Crowder's physicality, but one personnel director cautioned Dansby ``is not the most physical guy.'' Said Williamson: ``If there is one concern about Dansby, it would be when teams run right at him. In the AFC East, you have to be a banger.''

I'm not comfortable with the word "banger"
Regardless, what player doesn't struggle just a little when teams run right at them? That's why you have teammates. If teams want to "bang" Dansby, that's when Starks and Crowder and the DE's come in and make plays.

I'm a little concerned that against a team like NY or Baltimore, Mike Nolan's more finesse defense could struggle at times and get exposed in the run game.

But Dansby is a baller. This is the first I have heard of him not being that physical. I don't buy it.

Most cover type LBs aren't considered "bangers" because they arent 2 yds off the LOS playing overly aggressive. Crowder is definitely a "banger", thats just who it is. Dansby is a playmaker, kinda like Zach Thomas was. Plays his position, fulfills his role, and is either around or part of every tackle..... only difference: ZT was a MLB for a 4-3, Dansby is a ILB for a 3-4 (giving him less of an opportunity to shine the way Zach was able too). Zachs function was to roam the middle of the D, and you know his pursuit must have been the best in the league, meanwhile 4 linemen occupied the 5 OL in front of him. Dansby only has 3 linemen to occupy those 5, yet he gets the luxury of a partner to hold down the middle of the D. Hence, he dont need to be everywhere on the field. But just because Karlos isnt diving into the LOS for an overly aggressive stop, lets not be rash and say he isn't a banger. hes a baller, thats exactly what he is............ Plus theres only 2 games this year where he'll need to be a 'baller', and those are vs the Jets. otherwise, I would rather him stay in zone against those pesky NE slot guys, they irritate me, and our ILBs were always out of position against them
