DAVIE — With starting cornerbacks Vontae Davis and Sean Smith both coming off solid rookie seasons, there's been a tendency to look for another spot in the secondary for 32-year-old cornerback Will Allen.
Coach Tony Sparano rejected that idea.
"I see that threesome competing against each other," Sparano said from the Dolphins' training facility, where the team worked out Wednesday. "We're going to figure out who the best two guys are gonna be, and that's the way we're gonna go."
Because Allen signed a three-year, $16.2 million contract (with $10 million guaranteed) last May, the Dolphins likely will have to find a place for him to play, be it corner, nickel back or even the free safety job that remains a question mark following the offseason departure of Gibril Wilson.
But when asked about the possibility of filling the free safety hole, Allen bristled.
"Who says it's a hole?" he said. "Somebody's out there, and the person I see out there is looking good."
That would be second-year man Chris Clemons, who at this juncture is penciled in as the starter
