RIP Earl....

Quote:
According to several reports, legendary Dolphins quarterback Earl Morrall has died at the age of 79.

Morrall was Bob Griese's backup during the Dolphins 1972 season.

When Griese went down with an injury, Morrall stepped in and helped lead the Dolphins to perfection.

The true MVP of the Perfect Season, in my humble opinion.

Morrall's career highlights:

» Won the Rose Bowl and played in the College World Series for Michigan State

» NFL Most Valuable Player, 1968

» Starting quarterback on the losing side of the NFL's greatest upset: Joe Namath's iconic Super Bowl III guarantee that cemented the NFL-AFL merger

» First Comeback Player of the Year as well as AFC Player of the Year on the NFL's only undefeated team, 1972

» Developed Jim Kelly, Bernie Kosar and Vinny Testaverde as the University of Miami's quarterbacks coach in the 1980s

R.I.P. brother. He definitely doesn't get the credit/publicity he deserves for engineering the '72 undefeated season. The casual NFL fan would have no idea who he was, and what he accomplished.

I so admired Earl for what he did for the team.
God bless his family and friends.

Dave thanks for sharing that video with us.

RIP Earl. This guy was absolutely an unsung hero in the NFL. Unitas went down and he led Baltimore into a Superbowl (Twice) and won one and I believe he won like 14 games out of Miami's perfect 17-0 season and if it weren't for him that may not have happened as his veteran savvy leadership really helped prevail the Dolphins to victory in a few of those wins that season.

A really nice person too from what I remember in interviews and one of those throw back era guys for sure. Yeah, Dave I am right behind you as an old fart!

I have seen several interviews where coach Shula was asked about coaching greats like Marino, Griese and Unitas. Coach without fail spoke of Morrall just as highly as the other three. No Morrall no 17-0.

Honestly hadn't heard of him before watching Superbowl 3 on NFL Network the other day.

Dude looked terrible in that Superbowl, but he led the Colts to the big game, then the Dolphins too.

Not too bad for a career backup eh.
