Plus he can give us some Denver insight as they will be our main afc competition this year. We play them in the regular season as well but just might be seeing them in the afc championship game.

I'm surprised that Denver didn't try to match our deal with him.

Check out this hurdle over Ed Reed ...

This is from the Miami Herald Sports Buzz. Interesting.

### PFF ranked Moreno eighth among all running backs as a pass blocker. For perspective, Miller was 33rd, Thomas 34th.

I have no idea what they are quoting.

Here are the actual rankings from PFF.

Lamar Miller 7th
Knowshon Moreno 10th
Daniel Thomas 19th

Here are the stats.

Miller, 2 sacks, 5 pressures allowed
Moreno, 1 sack, 6 pressures allowed
Thomas, 3 sacks, 6 pressures allowed

I question the sample size then. As I recall, it was Thomas or Clay who was being used to pick up the blitz the majority of the time. Miller wasn't really asked all that much to pass protect.

You recall incorrectly.

Miller was in on 406 passing plays and was asked to block on 127 of them.

Thomas was in on 219 passing plays and was asked to block on 91.

Quote:
Moreno on the other hand was the primary pass protecting back in Denver all season long.

Moreno was in on 422 passing plays and was asked to block on 80 of them.

So he wasn't used to protect that much.

Miller had more snaps and therefore more opportunities to boost his grade and he took advantage of it.

Maybe he's not as bad at pass protection as you guys think he is. He struggled early on but he improved significantly as the season went on. But I guess people can't get past the first impression.

I think there will be a place for both Moreno and Miller and even with all the wonder on who is the better pass blocker, Rich has pointed out that statistically they are close enough to both handle it well.

Moreno is a veteran with more experience than Miller and perhaps he will be a good continued mentor to Lamar. I can see Lazor easily finding snaps for both and you still no matter what need Lamar's speed in the mix. If the lines improves, especially if they are effective with the zone blocking scheme and better o-line players that we should see more running lanes for our backs, which in my opinion makes a world of difference for Lamar's speed and getting going vs last year where his lanes got bottled up too much. Just my opinion.

I don't think they will use Moreno to pass protect that much, but use him more in the screen game.

And that in itself can be used as a tool to protect the QB.

After watching a bunch of videos I fully admit to being wrong on Moreno. The guy runs hard and looks to be a possible 3 down back. Loved seeing him fight for extra yards.

I fully expect him to be the lead guy in Miami this year.

Here is a question Rich. While I'm certainly not denying your statistics, why is it then that every single media outlet reporting on this signing is calling Moreno an upgrade over Miller, most specifically his pass protection skills?

It's just odd to me that nobody is talking about how Miller grades out as a better pass protector when the stats you've given are online for anyone to see? PFF isn't exactly a mystery and I'm sure the folks writing the material for NFL Network, ESPN, etc have access to this same info.

Premium stats are not online for everyone to see. You need to have an account.

Also, people tend to opine on first impressions etc. Miller had a rough start as a pass blocker so now that is the stigma. He got better as the season went on. Moreno won the starting job because Ball allowed Manning to get drilled during a preseason game. So his reputation is that he's a good pass blocker.

Also, the statistical difference between Moreno and Miller is negligible. Moreno is a good all around back, a significant upgrade over Daniel Thomas and Miller should get better as a runner and blocker at least.

Our backfield will be better this season and that's the bottom line.
