Post Paul Soliai "really, really doesn't want to leave Miami
Quote:
According to the Miami Herald, impending free agent DT Paul Soliai "really, really doesn't want to leave" Miami.
It's because of that fact that reporter Armando Salguero believes Soliai "may come cheaper" than fellow free agent DT Randy Starks. Per Salguero, both players were "somewhat peeved" at being forced to play out their contracts in 2013. Soliai has spent his entire seven-year career with the Dolphins. Although he's now on the wrong side of 30, Soliai is coming off another strong season, grading out as the No. 20 defensive tackle in Pro Football Focus' ratings.

But I thought all of the players in Miami wanted to abandon ship?

And both him and Starks sucked against the run this year. That abd the fact that he is on the wrong side of 30 tells me to say Sayonara. Odrick can take one spot and I'd love to see them draft Timmy Jernigan at 19

reality is alot of players "play out their contract" especially at 30.

they do need to get one of these guys done though imo. then the tag is available still for grimes.

on another note...that story about players wanting to leave is another example of the press giving bad publicity to the dolphins...just picking up where they left off last year.

Actually they graded out well defensively. The poor run defense was from poor linebacker play.

Who said that?

Only report was that some guys don't want to be a part of the circus that seems to constantly be going on in Miami. I buy that. Not sure who it is, but I could definitely see guys not wanting to waste their prime years under Philbin if they don't believe in him.

Let's hope the play better this year ... and that we add a quality linebacker in free agency/draft.

Soliai did not suck against the run. They ran away from hiim and we had piss poor linebackers behind him.

Swerve, your use of the word "all" has led to a little controversy here. We're going to give you the Pro Football Talk award for taking liberty with the evidence, buddy;)

So do you have some information to counter the tweet regarding several players wanting to leave?

And look around.... we are a clown squad.

To me it's just a ridiculous statement made about our players wanting to leave. Think about it, there were 18 other teams this year that were worse than us and you don't see any articles written about them saying their players want to get out of town because things are so bad. Always seems it's the Dolphins getting all the shots taken at them. Last year they said players wouldn't want to come here, and now they want to leave, just Bullcrap to me.

How many of those teams have the mess going on in our front office and lockerroom that the Dolphins have?

We are in a class of our own when it comes to drama and dysfunction now that Al Davis is dead.

Dallas is the head of the class...

Not only did we have the same record as the Jets, but we're way more dysfunctional.

You're focusing on wins and losses and not paying attention to the spanish soap opera our front office has become.

The only way this team is not in trouble is if some of the players step up as leaders and get the guys to rally. It is how they survived the Martin saga.

If Paul Soliai is willing to sign a very team friendly contract in order to stay a part of the team, then I don't understand how we could say no. He's still a very productive player. He was battling some injuries this season that clearly affected him (although not to the point where he wasn't productive). If Soliai is healthy, and his knees check out, I say re-sign him. Same goes for Starks. I'd love to see both guys back next year if it doesn't hurt us cap wise.

My dream scenario is one where the Dolphins are able to retain all of their productive free agents (Grimes, Soliai, Starks, Clemons, Incognito), sign a quality free agent to help the offensive line like Alex Mack or Branden Albert, and then keep building the team through the draft.

Oh yeah, and get Jimmy Graham (wishful thinking) too.

We could really use a guy like Decker, but doubt that he fits into the budget.

While it would be nice to get a receiver of his size. Decker isn't worth the money. I live in Denver and have seen plenty a Bronco game. The guy drops the ball on a frequent basis. His numbers before Peyton Manning weren't exactly Pro Bowl caliber as well. I personally think Hartline is a better receiver. In my opinion a healthy trio of Wallace, Hartline, and Gibson is a very solid group.

I'd be happy to see everyone return. Only Grimes would be more expensive. If starks signs a deal rather than being tagged we're good. Only one I really want gone is Martin. Well, maybe Wheeler too. Brandon Gibson coming back will shore up the WRs

There are several moves the Dolphins could take to free up even more cap space this offseason. The often injured Dmitri Patterson is due to make $5.7M in 2014. He played very well when he was healthy and on the field. I'd love to see the Dolphins re-structure his deal and re-sign him to a cheaper two or three year deal to play across from Grimes. The man had a sack, four interceptions, and six passes defended to go along with nineteen tackles in only six games this year. Imagine how well he would have played had he been 100% and playing all sixteen games? Anyway, re-doing his deal would keep a good player on the team and free up some money. I seriously doubt the guy will get much more from another team considering how many games he's missed the last two years.

In addition, if we trade or cut Jonathan Martin (which is likely going to happen) we also free up about $1M in space as well.

Then, if you're able to draft a runningback to replace Daniel Thomas you free up another $1M in cap space.

That money, plus the roughly $30M I think I read that we have this upcoming offseason should be more than enough for us to re-sign all of our key players and make a run at a couple of free agents.

I don't think we'll replace our linebacking corps just yet. Misi and Wheeler underperformed this year, but I think they'll both get one more shot to prove they're long term starters in 2014.
