Anyone else think players should run there 40's in full pads ect? Seems like the numbers are scewed by people who are just fast, and not strong. Add weight, then see who still runs the 4.3.

I say this because some people who have horrible 40 times seem to haul rear on the field. At the same time people who run a 4.25 can get caught by that 4.9 guy on the field.

That is were being a good scout/personnel guy comes into play. You watch game film to see how a guy plays on the field.

C.J Spiller ran a 4.37 at the combine and looks like he is that fast on the field, same as Trindon Holliday, the WR/RS from LSU. He ran a 4.34 40 at the combine and is a world class sprinter and he looks like it when the pads are on.

Then you have Brandon Spikes, a guy that ran 4.99 & 5.03 at the combine. You watch him play and he looks much quicker than that. His football speed on the field is quicker than his 40 time as strange as that may sound.

There are plenty of guys that run fast 40 times but don't play as fast as there 40 time would suggest. It your job as a personnel guy to see that in your film study and seeing the player perform during the season.

I think as far as 40 time or game speed is all in there heads, now here me out. Spiller and Holiday run fast in pads and out, cause in there heads its all the same to them. They get the ball in there hands, make there cuts and there gone. While out of pads they know they still have all that speed. Now take a player like Spikes, who I think is a hell of a LB and can be a great help to us. He has what we call game speed,in his head he sees plays happen and will react to them fast. Thats why when you see tape on him he is fast to the ball,or in the right spot to make a play. Without pads he is slower, cause in his head he's not running after anything. Like some ppl will run on a treadmill for a while, but wont jog anywhere, and vise versa. So you do need the 40 but never overlook the game speed as well.
